I’m a retired professional boxer, sponsored adventure racer and mountain biker and all around LOVER of all things active and endurance racing. I have 2 boys and a girl that I absolutely live life for. I’ve been a contributing writer for several fitness magazines as well as a feature in such publications as Vogue, Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Backpacker and Men’s Journal – through Motor City Bootcamp and Watters Performance. Both strength and conditioning programs that I own. I’m the head coach of Team Priority Health Endurance Racing and a member of the Brooks PACE (performance and coaching elite) and ID (inspire daily) programs.

All those things being said, my alter ego has partied with rock stars, failed at almost everything I’ve done (once), had the most humiliating experience of my life televised and been an all around ass hole to almost everyone I’ve come in contact with. I think this blog is about balance and walking that line between listening to that little voice in your head and having the willpower to resist it. Being the person you want to be is NOT an easy thing. At least not for everyone. I think that’s why people, like me, long for it so much. It takes us that much more work to pull it off.

I’m tryin’… I’m tryin’ hard to be the shepherd

This blog is an outlet for me. Not just to spread the word to those that already follow me but hopefully to attract some new “disciples” that are tired of hearing about the latest and greatest and are ready to be told that it WILL hurt and it DOES suck at times. But, in the end, the price you had to pay is equal to what you get out of it. Some of what you read, you might not like. If it’s too opinionated, don’t follow it. If you think you have a better message that contradicts everything I publish here? Right on, start your own blog. Maybe my way is all wrong, maybe I’m full of shit. Who knows. My way is what’s worked for me and it’s worked for many others. Will it work for you? Probably so, if you’re true to it and don’t try to bullshit your way through it. Always remember, you can’t cheat the grind.

    • Hey Mandy – The boxing and burst classes are all at my studio in Ferndale. The Motor City Bootcamp classes (the ones at 5:30 am) are at various outdoor meeting spots in Birmingham. There’s different packages for different classes. You’re more than welcome to come in for a week to try anything out and see if it’s what you’re looking for. Just let me know…

  1. #1 – Love the Jules Winnfield quote…

#2 – Some friends of mine told me about you, your programs, and invited me out this Saturday morning bright & early. They mentioned that you accommodate individual visits as a ‘test drive’, but didn’t discuss what value/price you placed on a person showing up once. Can you confirm that you provide the ‘test drive’ situation and what that one session would cost?

    • Thanks for the inquiry and please thank your friends for sending you my way. You’re more than welcome to come out Saturday and check it out. I won’t charge you a fee to come try it, just have you sign a release. Other than that, we’re good. Just as an FYI – I have a boxing group starting at 6:45 that will roll into a “burst”, or interval, workout immediately after. That class consists of some kettlebell work and other resistance type moves done in a circuit type format. Though it’s listed separately, many people use it as one long class. You’re more than welcome to do the same.

  2. Hey Jeff, I met you today at the kid’s race and I am friends with the Kim chick. It was great fun and wonderful to met the Jeff and Dori I have heard so much about!

Are you still looking for 2 – 4 people for your 8 week “slim down, weight loss, etc” program? and, what is the price for this program?

  3. Hey Jeff, i am 22yrs old and am leaving for Marine Corps bootcamp nov 26. i train twice a week with other poolees but dont do much on my own, ive been looking for something to do during the rest of the week that will get me in top shape and your programs seem to have what im looking for. i cant find a location on this site to come and talk to someone and see what you guys do. i also see that you have a few different programs to sign up for. can you get back to me with some info on location and what program might be geared towards what i need? thanks!

    • Hey Ian, thanks for the email. The majority of what I do comes from my athletic background as a professional fighter and from training other athletes and people in need of an intense fitness regimen. I think you’d certainly fit that bill. I have a good group of people from various fitness backgrounds that are currently participating in my group workouts. I do one on one as well, if you need something a little more specified. I don’t think that would be the issue though. Are you an early riser or would you need something that could be done at a “normal” time?

  4. hey Jeff, thanks for the reply, on mondays and wednesdays i am able to do early workouts because i dont work, i have pt with other recruits around 2pm on those days, weekends are also open but tuesday thursday and friday i work from around 7 until mid afternoon so i would need something later. let me know what you think. thanks.

    • I think that, by far, the best way to go would be to sign on with me for a 3 month MCB package. It’s the most cost effective way to go and I’d give you a military discount. If you wanted to do Motor City Bootcamp only, which is the 5:30 am workout, you could do it for 325. Normal cost is 375. If you wanted to do the “fusion” package, which is anything listed on the schedule, including boxing and burst, you would pay 470, normal cost is 570. Let me know.

  5. that sounds like what i need, the morning workouts will help me get on a boot camp schedule as well. i will need a week or two to gather the money though.

    • I have no problem with you starting now. You can pay me in the next week or two. That way we don’t have a lag time. Especially being that we’re on a bit of a short leash with regard to the amount of time you have before leaving. Let me know.

      • I do have workouts on Sunday. However, this Sunday we’ll be at Bloomer Park doing trail work. I think you’d like it. It’s going to be 90 – 120 minutes long. Lots of hills, stairs, bridge jumps and exercises. The only catch is that it’s a fundraiser for a group called gloves-on.com, so there’s a $15 charge for the workout. The workout begins at 9 am. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll tell you where to meet. If not, we’ll plan on Monday.
